The Captive-Bred Baby Sulcata Tortoise, also known as the African Spurred Tortoise, is one of the most impressive tortoise species in the world. As the third-largest tortoise species, Sulcatas are admired for their powerful build, friendly personality, and remarkable lifespan. While young Sulcata Tortoises can be housed in a spacious tortoise table or well-ventilated vivarium, they will eventually require a much larger enclosure as they mature. During the summer months, they can safely enjoy supervised outdoor time but should always be brought indoors overnight.

Temperature & Heating

Like all tortoises, Sulcata Tortoises are cold-blooded reptiles that rely on external heat to regulate their body temperature.

To provide the ideal environment, maintain the following temperatures:

• Basking Area: 85°F–90°F (29°C–32°C)
• Daytime Ambient Temperature: Around 80°F (27°C)
• Nighttime Temperature: 65°F–75°F (18°C–24°C)

Native to the dry savannahs and semi-desert regions of Central Africa, Sulcata Tortoises thrive in warm environments with low humidity and a consistent temperature gradient.

UV Lighting Requirements

Proper UVA and UVB lighting is essential for healthy shell growth and overall wellbeing. Your Sulcata should receive at least 12 hours of UV lighting every day to encourage natural activity, stimulate appetite, and promote the production of Vitamin D3, which is necessary for efficient calcium absorption and strong bones.

A quality UV lighting system combined with an appropriate daytime heat source is recommended for both tortoise tables and vivariums.

Diet & Nutrition

Sulcata Tortoises are strict herbivores and require a high-fibre diet to maintain healthy growth.

A balanced daily diet should include:

• Grasses and hay
• Leafy greens
• Safe edible weeds and plants
• Fresh vegetables in moderation
• Premium tortoise pellets, such as Komodo Complete Pellet Food

To support healthy shell development and strong bones, dust food daily with a calcium and multivitamin supplement, such as Reptavite or Calcium Powder. Fresh food should be provided every day.

Hydration

Although Sulcata Tortoises naturally come from dry climates, regular hydration remains essential.

Provide clean drinking water every day and soak your baby Sulcata in a shallow dish of warm water at least once each week. Routine soaking helps maintain hydration, supports healthy digestion, and assists with the natural elimination of waste and uric acid.

Substrate

Choosing the right substrate helps maintain a clean and comfortable habitat.

Hemp bedding is highly recommended because it is:

• Dust-free
• Highly absorbent
• Easy to clean
• Comfortable for everyday use

Remove waste daily and replace the substrate completely approximately every three weeks, or sooner whenever necessary.

Hibernation

Sulcata Tortoises do not hibernate. They require consistent warmth and proper husbandry throughout the year.
