Description
2025 Captive-Bred Eastern Hermann Tortoise
The 2025 Captive-Bred Eastern Hermann Tortoise is an excellent choice for reptile enthusiasts seeking a friendly, hardy, and easy-to-care-for pet. As one of the most popular Mediterranean tortoise species, Eastern Hermann Tortoises are known for their manageable size, gentle temperament, and long lifespan. They thrive in either a tortoise table or a well-ventilated vivarium and can safely enjoy supervised outdoor time during the warmer summer months.
Temperature & Heating
Eastern Hermann Tortoises are cold-blooded reptiles that rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature and maintain healthy activity levels.
For the ideal habitat, provide:
- Basking Area: 85°F–90°F (29°C–32°C)
- Daytime Ambient Temperature: Approximately 78°F (26°C)
- Nighttime Temperature: 65°F–70°F (18°C–21°C)
Because these tortoises originate from the warm, dry climates of Southern Europe, they require low humidity and a well-maintained thermal gradient within their enclosure.
UV Lighting Requirements
Proper UVA and UVB lighting is essential for healthy growth and shell development. Your tortoise should receive 12 hours of UV lighting every day to encourage natural behaviour, stimulate appetite, and promote Vitamin D3 production, which is vital for calcium absorption and strong bone development.
Recommended Lighting Setup
For an Open Tortoise Table:
- Arcadia Mercury Vapour bulb providing combined heat, UVA, and UVB.
For a Vivarium:
- Arcadia T5 UVA/UVB tube
- Reflector
- Starter controller
- Separate daytime heat lamp
A quality heat mat is recommended for maintaining safe nighttime temperatures regardless of the enclosure type.
Diet & Nutrition
Eastern Hermann Tortoises are herbivores and thrive on a varied, high-fibre diet.
Daily meals should consist of:
- Leafy greens
- Edible plants and weeds
- Fresh vegetables
- Premium tortoise pellets, such as Komodo Complete Pellet Food
To support healthy shell growth and strong bones, lightly dust food each day with a calcium and multivitamin supplement such as Reptavite or Calcium Powder. Fresh food should always be provided daily.
Hydration
Although Hermann Tortoises drink relatively small amounts of water, regular hydration is still essential.
Provide fresh drinking water every day and soak your tortoise in a shallow container of warm water at least once each week. Weekly soaking helps maintain hydration while supporting healthy digestion and the natural elimination of waste and uric acid.
Substrate
Selecting the right substrate contributes significantly to your tortoise’s comfort and health.
Hemp bedding is highly recommended because it is:
- Dust-free
- Highly absorbent
- Easy to clean
- Comfortable for natural digging behaviours
Remove droppings daily and replace all bedding approximately every three weeks, or sooner if required.
Hibernation
Healthy adult Eastern Hermann Tortoises are capable of hibernating under suitable conditions. However, hibernation is not recommended during the first three years of life or for tortoises that have not yet reached an appropriate weight and size.
Always seek appropriate advice before hibernating your tortoise and ensure it is in excellent health beforehand.
