Description

Overview:

Black Wood Turtles (Rhinoclemmys funerea), also called Giant Black Wood Turtles.

They are the largest of all the wood turtles. They are found in the Marshes, ponds and streams of central America form Nicaragua south all the way to Panama. Giant Black Wood Turtles are a striking, dark shelled Wood Turtle with pretty yellow highlights on their arms and heads. Some even have faint red head markings.

Just like their American counterparts (North American Woods), Giant Black Wood Turtles love to bask, and they are very active, and are highly intelligent. True omnivores, they love fruits veggies and many grasses and sprouts. Ours also take cut beef heart, worms of all kinds and they particularly enjoy turtle pellets.

This is a perfect species for keepers who want to enjoy North American Wood Turtles, but live in states that restrict them. They are very similar in behavior and they are similar in large size, growing even larger. They are also very out going and personable just like North American Wood Turtles. Coming from the warmer climates, they do need to be inside in colder months (below 45 degrees at night). Also just like North American Wood Turtles, they enjoy varied terrain, shallow to deep water, and they make good use of any and all land.

If your outdoor pond and enclosure is large and could use some activity and excitement, this is your wood turtle ! They are very outgoing and friendly.

Giant Black Wood Turtles are allowed to be kept in range states for North American Wood Turtles. So if you grew up seeing and enjoying North American Wood Turtles, but you live in a NA Wood range state that restricts having them – this is your turtle… They are a sub tropical species, but their dark coloring does enable them to soak up warmth from the sun in colder weather. Of course they do need ample shade. When they’re out doors, days in the 50s and up – and nights at least in the 40s works fine for these amazing turtles.

We hatch a bunch of them every year & we even grow some for immediate introduction to outside ponds, but they do sell out pretty quickly, so get them while you can
