The 2026 Captive-Bred Baby Leopard Tortoise is a stunning and rewarding reptile, admired for its beautifully patterned, high-domed shell and calm temperament. Native to the African savannah, Leopard Tortoises are among the largest pet tortoise species and make an excellent choice for keepers who have the space to accommodate their impressive adult size. They can be housed in a spacious tortoise table or a well-ventilated vivarium and may enjoy supervised outdoor time on warm days when temperatures reach the high 20s°C.

Temperature & Heating

Like all tortoises, Leopard Tortoises are cold-blooded reptiles that rely on external heat to regulate their body temperature.

Maintain the following temperatures for a healthy enclosure:

• Basking Area: 85°F–90°F (29°C–32°C)
• Daytime Ambient Temperature: Around 80°F (27°C)
• Nighttime Temperature: 65°F–75°F (18°C–24°C)

Because Leopard Tortoises naturally inhabit the warm, dry grasslands of Africa, they require low humidity and a stable heat gradient throughout their enclosure.

UV Lighting Requirements

Proper UVA and UVB lighting is essential for healthy growth and shell development. Provide at least 12 hours of UV lighting each day to encourage natural activity, stimulate appetite, and support the production of Vitamin D3. This allows your tortoise to absorb calcium efficiently, promoting strong bones and a healthy shell.

A high-quality UV lighting system combined with an appropriate daytime heat source is recommended for both tortoise tables and vivariums.

Diet & Nutrition

Leopard Tortoises are herbivores and require a varied, fibre-rich diet to remain healthy throughout their lives.

Their daily diet should include:

• Leafy greens
• Safe grasses and edible plants
• Fresh vegetables
• Premium tortoise pellets, such as Komodo Complete Pellet Food

To maintain healthy shell growth and bone development, dust food daily with a calcium and multivitamin supplement, such as Reptavite or Calcium Powder. Fresh food should always be available every day.

Hydration

Although Leopard Tortoises drink relatively small amounts of water, regular hydration is still essential.

Provide clean, fresh drinking water daily and soak your tortoise in a shallow dish of warm water at least once each week. Regular soaking helps maintain hydration while supporting healthy digestion and the natural elimination of waste and uric acid.

Substrate

Choosing the correct substrate helps create a clean and comfortable environment.

Hemp bedding is highly recommended because it is:

• Dust-free
• Highly absorbent
• Easy to maintain
• Comfortable for everyday use

Spot-clean waste daily and replace the bedding completely approximately every three weeks, or sooner whenever necessary.

Hibernation

Unlike many Mediterranean tortoise species, Leopard Tortoises do not hibernate. They require warm temperatures and consistent care throughout the entire year.
