Description
Captive-Bred Baby Horsfield Tortoise (2025)
The Captive-Bred Baby Horsfield Tortoise (2025) is an excellent choice for both first-time reptile owners and experienced tortoise enthusiasts. Loved for their compact size, hardy nature, and calm temperament, Horsfield Tortoises are relatively easy to care for and make rewarding long-term companions. They can be comfortably housed in either a tortoise table or a well-ventilated vivarium and can safely enjoy supervised outdoor time during warm, sunny weather.
Temperature & Heating
As cold-blooded reptiles, Horsfield Tortoises rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature and remain active.
For a healthy habitat, maintain the following temperatures:
- Basking Area: 85°F–90°F (29°C–32°C)
- Daytime Ambient Temperature: Around 75°F (24°C)
- Nighttime Temperature: 65°F–70°F (18°C–21°C)
Because Horsfield Tortoises originate from the dry regions of Central Asia, they thrive in environments with low humidity and good ventilation.
UV Lighting Requirements
Proper UV lighting is essential for your tortoise’s health and development. Provide 12 hours of UVA and UVB lighting each day to encourage natural behaviours, stimulate appetite, and support the production of Vitamin D3. This vital nutrient allows the body to absorb calcium, promoting strong bones, healthy shell growth, and overall wellbeing.
Diet & Nutrition
Horsfield Tortoises are herbivores and require a varied, fibre-rich diet.
A balanced daily diet should include:
- Leafy greens
- Safe edible plants
- Fresh vegetables
- High-quality tortoise pellets, such as Komodo Complete Pellet Food
To support healthy growth and shell development, lightly dust their food each day with a calcium and multivitamin supplement, such as Reptavite or Calcium Powder. Fresh food should always be offered daily.
Hydration
Although Horsfield Tortoises rarely drink large amounts of water, they still require regular hydration.
Always provide fresh drinking water and soak your tortoise in a shallow dish of warm water at least once a week. Regular soaking helps maintain hydration while encouraging healthy digestion and the natural elimination of waste and uric acid.
Substrate
The right substrate helps keep your tortoise healthy and comfortable.
Hemp bedding is an excellent choice because it is:
- Dust-free
- Highly absorbent
- Easy to maintain
- Comfortable for digging and burrowing
Spot-clean droppings every day and replace the substrate completely approximately every three weeks, or sooner if necessary.
Hibernation
Healthy adult Horsfield Tortoises are capable of hibernating under the right conditions. However, hibernation is not recommended during the first three years of life or for tortoises that have not yet reached a suitable size and healthy weight.
If you intend to hibernate your tortoise, ensure it is in excellent health and follow appropriate guidance before beginning the process.
