Description
Captive-Bred Spur-Thighed Tortoise
The Captive-Bred Spur-Thighed Tortoise is one of the most popular Mediterranean tortoise species, valued for its hardy nature, calm temperament, and ease of care. Suitable for both beginners and experienced reptile keepers, these tortoises thrive in either a tortoise table or a well-ventilated vivarium. During the warmer summer months, they can also enjoy supervised time outdoors in a secure enclosure.
Temperature & Heating
Spur-Thighed Tortoises are cold-blooded reptiles and rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature.
For the best results, maintain the following temperatures within the enclosure:
- Basking Area: 85°F–90°F (29°C–32°C)
- Daytime Ambient Temperature: Approximately 78°F (26°C)
- Nighttime Temperature: 65°F–70°F (18°C–21°C)
Native to the warm, dry regions of Southern Europe, Spur-Thighed Tortoises require low humidity and a well-maintained temperature gradient to stay healthy and active.
UV Lighting Requirements
High-quality UVA and UVB lighting is essential for your tortoise’s health. Provide at least 12 hours of UV lighting each day to encourage natural behaviour, stimulate appetite, and support the production of Vitamin D3. This enables proper calcium absorption, promoting strong bones and healthy shell growth.
A reliable UV lighting system paired with an appropriate heat source should be used throughout the day.
Diet & Nutrition
Spur-Thighed Tortoises are herbivores and require a varied, fibre-rich diet.
A balanced daily menu should include:
- Leafy greens
- Safe edible weeds and plants
- Fresh vegetables
- Premium tortoise pellets, such as Komodo Complete Pellet Food
To maintain healthy shell growth and overall development, lightly dust food daily with a calcium and multivitamin supplement, such as Reptavite or Calcium Powder. Fresh food should always be provided every day.
Hydration
Although Spur-Thighed Tortoises consume relatively little water, they still require regular hydration.
Provide fresh drinking water every day and soak your tortoise in a shallow container of warm water at least once each week. Routine soaking helps maintain hydration while supporting healthy digestion and assisting with the natural elimination of waste and uric acid.
Substrate
A suitable substrate helps create a clean and comfortable habitat.
Hemp bedding is highly recommended because it is:
- Dust-free
- Highly absorbent
- Easy to maintain
- Comfortable for everyday use
Remove waste daily and replace the substrate completely approximately every three weeks, or sooner whenever necessary.
Hibernation
Healthy adult Spur-Thighed Tortoises can hibernate under the right conditions. However, hibernation is not recommended during the first three years of life or until your tortoise has reached a healthy size and weight.
Always ensure your tortoise is in excellent health before considering hibernation and follow appropriate husbandry guidance.
