EASTERN HERMANN TORTOISE, ENCLOSURE & STARTER KIT PACKAGE!

Hermann Tortoises are very easy to care for and a popular breed of tortoise because of their small size and hardy nature. They can be kept in a tortoise table or vivarium and can go outside on the hotter days. Tortoises are cold-blooded reptiles that need heat to function. Hermanns require a basking hotspot temperature of 85F-90F and a ambient temperature of 70F-80F during the day. At night time the temperature should between 65F-70F. These tortoises come from hot and dry areas where the air humidity is low.

They also require Ultra Violet lighting (UVA and UVB) for at least 12 hours a day, this stimulates appetite, activity and promotes vitamin D3 synthesis which tortoises need to absorb calcium and for strong bones and healthy growth. For an enclosed vivarium set up we recommend you use an Arcadia T5 Pro UVB tube and reflector, then a separate infrared heat bulb. For an open top tortoise table we recommend you use an Arcadia Mercury Vapour combined heat and UVA/UVB bulb and dome holder. Both set ups require heating at night time, we recommend a heat mat.

A multi-vitamin supplement must be added to their daily diet (Reptavite/Calcium Powder). A good mixture of leaves, plants, vegetables and our Komodo complete pellet food will ensure your tortoise has a balanced diet. Fresh food should be given everyday. Tortoises drink very little water. They should be bathed in a shallow dish of fresh warm water at least once a week. This hydrate them and helps them release their motions and uric acid. Fresh water should be given everyday.

We have found that hemp bedding the best substrate to use for Hermann as it is dust free and easy to clean. Droppings can be picked out daily and cleaned out fully every 3 weeks or when necessary.

Hermann tortoises can hibernate although it is not recommend to for the first 3 years or if they are not the correct weight and size.
