The 2025 Captive-Bred Baby Marginated Tortoise is an excellent choice for reptile keepers looking for a beautiful, hardy, and long-lived companion. As the largest of the Mediterranean tortoise species, the Marginated Tortoise is admired for its distinctive shell shape, gentle nature, and impressive adult size. These tortoises can be comfortably housed in either a tortoise table or a well-ventilated vivarium and can enjoy supervised outdoor time during the warm summer months.

Temperature & Heating

Marginated Tortoises are cold-blooded reptiles that rely on external heat to regulate their body temperature and remain healthy.

For optimal care, maintain the following temperatures:

• Basking Area: 85°F–95°F (29°C–35°C)
• Daytime Ambient Temperature: Approximately 78°F (26°C)
• Nighttime Temperature: 65°F–70°F (18°C–21°C)

Native to the warm, dry regions of Southern Europe, Marginated Tortoises thrive in environments with low humidity and a well-maintained temperature gradient.

UV Lighting Requirements

Daily exposure to high-quality UVA and UVB lighting is essential for healthy growth and shell development. Your tortoise should receive 12 hours of UV lighting each day to encourage natural behaviour, stimulate appetite, and support the production of Vitamin D3, which is necessary for calcium absorption and strong bones.

Whether your tortoise lives in a tortoise table or vivarium, ensure it has access to appropriate UV lighting and a reliable heat source throughout the day.

Diet & Nutrition

Marginated Tortoises are herbivores that require a varied, fibre-rich diet to maintain excellent health.

Their daily meals should include:

• Leafy greens
• Safe edible plants and weeds
• Fresh vegetables
• Premium tortoise pellets, such as Komodo Complete Pellet Food

For healthy shell growth and strong bones, lightly dust food each day with a calcium and multivitamin supplement, such as Reptavite or Calcium Powder. Fresh food should always be provided daily.

Hydration

Although Marginated Tortoises consume relatively little water, regular hydration remains an important part of their care.

Provide fresh drinking water every day and soak your tortoise in a shallow container of warm water at least once each week. Routine soaking helps maintain hydration while supporting healthy digestion and the natural elimination of waste and uric acid.

Substrate

A clean, comfortable substrate helps create a healthy living environment.

Hemp bedding is highly recommended because it is:

• Dust-free
• Highly absorbent
• Easy to clean
• Comfortable and suitable for everyday use

Spot-clean waste daily and replace the bedding completely approximately every three weeks, or sooner whenever necessary.

Hibernation

Healthy adult Marginated Tortoises are capable of hibernating under suitable conditions. However, hibernation is not recommended during the first three years of life or until your tortoise has reached an appropriate size and healthy weight.

Before attempting hibernation, ensure your tortoise is in excellent health and follow reliable husbandry guidance.
