These tortoises thrive in either a tortoise table or a well-ventilated vivarium and can safely enjoy supervised outdoor time during warm, sunny weather.

Temperature & Heating

Like all reptiles, Western Dwarf Hermann Tortoises are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature.

To maintain a healthy environment, provide the following temperatures:

• Basking Area: 85°F–90°F (29°C–32°C)
• Daytime Ambient Temperature: 70°F–80°F (21°C–27°C)
• Nighttime Temperature: 65°F–70°F (18°C–21°C)

Because this species originates from warm, dry climates, maintaining low humidity levels is essential for their overall health and wellbeing.

UV Lighting Requirements

Proper UVA and UVB lighting is vital for healthy growth and long-term wellbeing. Your tortoise should receive approximately 12 hours of UV lighting each day to encourage natural activity, stimulate appetite, and support the production of Vitamin D3. This vitamin allows the body to absorb calcium, promoting strong bones and a healthy shell.

Recommended lighting setups include:

• Vivarium Setup: Arcadia T5 Pro UVB tube with reflector combined with a separate infrared heat lamp.
• Open Tortoise Table: Arcadia Mercury Vapour bulb, which provides heat, UVA, and UVB in a single fixture, used with a suitable dome holder.

For nighttime warmth, a quality heat mat is recommended to maintain safe temperatures after the lights switch off.

Diet & Nutrition

Western Dwarf Hermann Tortoises are strict herbivores that require a varied, high-fibre diet.

Their daily meals should include:

• Leafy greens
• Edible weeds and flowers
• Safe vegetables
• Suitable plants
• Premium tortoise pellets, such as Komodo Complete Pellet Food

To ensure optimal nutrition, dust food daily with a quality calcium and multivitamin supplement, such as Reptavite or Calcium Powder. Fresh food should always be provided each day to maintain a balanced diet.

Hydration

Although Hermann Tortoises rarely drink large quantities of water, proper hydration remains extremely important.

Fresh drinking water should always be available, and your tortoise should be soaked in a shallow container of warm water at least once every week. Regular soaking helps maintain hydration, supports digestion, and encourages the natural elimination of waste and uric acid.

Substrate

Choosing the right substrate helps create a clean and comfortable habitat.

Hemp bedding is one of the best options because it is:

• Dust-free
• Highly absorbent
• Easy to clean
• Comfortable for burrowing and walking

Remove waste daily and replace the entire substrate every three weeks, or sooner if required.

Hibernation

Healthy adult Western Dwarf Hermann Tortoises are capable of hibernating under suitable conditions. However, hibernation is not recommended during the first three years of life or for tortoises that have not yet reached a healthy size and weight.

Always ensure your tortoise is in excellent health before considering hibernation and seek professional guidance if needed.
